Welcome To Tahoma Gold
7th Grade Girls Fastpitch
Great
Season for the Golden Girls!!
Tahoma Gold of CRMS closed
out their season with a record of 6-4, good for 4th place
in the Kent-Tahoma League. Not only did we finish with a
strong winning record, but more importantly, we showed great
improvement from the beginning of the season to the end. Even
opposing coaches and umpires recognized that growth and shared
their praise with the Bears. Congratulations, ladies!
Remember the team celebration on Wednesday, October 28. Coach Hulme
will be providing informational flyers!
Go Bears!
More Schedule Updates!
The LP game
of 10/2 will not be rescheduled. Bummer!
The postponed 9/29 home game vs. Meridian has been rescheduled for
Monday, 10/19.
Schedule Update
The LP
(Limited Participation) game on Oct. 2 will be Cedar Heights @
Tahoma Gold. That will follow our regular game @ Cedar
Heights on Oct. 1.
Schedule Revision
The Sept. 29 game with
Meridian has been postponed. Please watch here and on the Events
calendar for the rescheduled date.
Picture Day
Pictures will be
done here at CRMS on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the beginning of
practice. Full uniform, please: top, shorts, sleeves, sliders,
socks and cleats. See information in earlier
Announcements, or under Documents, for equipment/uniform
details.
Order forms are on their way! We will have hard copies and they
will also be available on the Tahoma Fastpitch website.

ASB Dues and Participation Fees
Remember that your
ASB dues and Participation Fee ("pay-to-play") must be paid
in order to be eligible to play in a game.
We still have two
(2) girls who need to pay ASB, and twelve (12) who need to pay
the Participation Fee. Coaches and the Athletic
Director will be contacting the girls personally,
but players may also want to check with the cashier on Tuesday
or Thursday to confirm their eligibility status. If your family has
concerns about paying these two fees, please contact Coach Hulme or
Ms Ennis.
We don't want to start the season NEXT WEEK by
forfeiting games because we don't have enough girls
eligible to play. Right now we only have 3 eligible
players! Come on, Bears, let's take care of business off
the field so we can take care of business ON the field!!

Parent Meeting Follow-up
Thanks to all who
attended the parent meeting last week. We need to make sure that
everyone signed in with Coach Hulme; your daughter cannot play
until that has happened! Please contact Coach Hulme if you need to
take care of that.
Also, be sure you completed the Disclaimer/Release form
for the boosters. Your daughter cannot be listed or shown on the
website or program until that has happened! If you did not get the
forms at the parent meeting, you can find them under the Documents
tab on this website. (They're probably on the Tahoma Fastpitch
website as well.)

Boy, did we get off the field just in time, or what? Yikes!
Coach Hulme and Coach Davis would like to thank all the Bears who
tried out for fastpitch this fall. We were impressed by what we saw
out on the field: lots of hustle, lots of skill, lots of learning,
and lots of spirit! Congratulations to all you ladies, and we're
looking forward to a great season of Golden Girls fastpitch!

Remember to bring your SPIRIT WEAR orders on Tuesday,
Sept. 8, with a check made out to MV Fastpitch
Boosters. If you need an additional form, you can print one
from the Tahoma Fastpitch website at www.bearsfastpitch.com/documents.
You will be giving your order and your check to the team manager on
TUESDAY.
On Thursday, Sept.
10 we will be having a special practice at TJH. The practice
will be led by by one of the premier fastpitch players in the
United States, so bring something to get autographed!
Transportation will be provided from CRMS to TJH, but players must
be picked up at TJH.
A mandatory parent
meeting will follow the special practice at TJH on Thursday, Sept.
10, beginning at 5:30. One of your parents/guardians MUST
attend for you to be eligible to play in a game. If they cannot
attend, they must contact Coach Hulme to arrange another time to
meet.
Congratulations! GO BEARS!
Concussion/Head Injury Law
As you may know, a new state
law regarding concussions and head injuries recently went into
effect. It is actually named after Maple Valley's Zach Lystedt, who
was injured playing football several years ago. All coaches in the
state--school, club, select, community rec, etc.--are now required
to receive training on this topic before holding any tryouts,
practices, or games. In our recent district training, it
was made clear that the district's interpretation of the law leaves
us very little discretion regarding our players. If players display or
express any of the indicators of a potential head injury, we are
required to sit them out of practice or a game, and they are not
allowed to return until they submit to the school's Athletic
Director a signed clearance from an approved medical
professional (as described in the law.)
It is very important for
players and parents to be familiar with this new law. The
"indicators" identified in the law include almost anything,
including lethargy, headaches, stomach aches, and just "not feeling
well." In effect, this means that if a player shows
signs of such things, or expresses them verbally, we will be
required to sit them out until they receive medical clearance.
Players will need to
consider seriously, on a daily basis, if they are fit for practice
or a game. If they start and then have issues with their
health--either visibly or verbally--it will no longer be as simple
as just resting or sitting out the rest of the day. They will have
to see an appoved medical professional before they can return to
practice or competition. While that is certainly an
inconvenience, it is how the law is being interpreted. If a
player is not sure they can complete practice or a game in good
health, their family might decide that it would be better for
them to not participate at all until they feel up to
it.
For more informaton, please see the Tahoma Athletic Handbook. You
should have a copy from completing the "Pink Card"
clearance process, or you can find it under Documents on this site
or the Tahoma Athletics site.
2009 TRYOUTS!
They're almost here! Tryouts start the SECOND
DAY of SCHOOL! They will be held Sept. 3 and 4 (Thursday and
Friday.) If needed, we may continue on the following Tuesday.
Get your PINK CARD, get your gear, get excited!
Go
Bears!!
Getting Ready for Tryouts
During the summer, there are a
number of things you can do to help yourself be ready for tryouts
in September. Some advance preparation can help you show your
best!
--Get the gear you need! See the document on this
site.
--Work out! Run, ride your bike, swim, jump rope, go
to the gym, do yoga, play tennis (squeeze a tennis ball!), go
canoeing or kayaking. Just do things to work on the basics of
fitness; cardio, strength, and flexibility. The more fit you are,
the better you will be able to perform on the softball field!
--Practice softball skills! Play catch (with
purpose!) Go to a batting cage, hit off a tee, have someone toss
whiffles to you. Go to an open ballfield and have someone hit
grounders and flies to you. Actually, any open space is fine for
flies, and that's an area that most young players really need to
work on. When you work on fielding, also work on quality
throwing. Practice running bases. If you have someone who can
show you how to do it properly, practice sliding (on the grass or
a big piece of cardboard is fine to start with.) If you're
interested in pitching, get some information and/or coaching on how
to get started with that--and then practice, practice,
practice!
--Check out the "Sportskool" link on this
website! It will show you a LOT about
how the game is played and how to do things properly! You'll
learn a ton and come to tryouts with a better understanding of
the game!
Reminder to Parents and
Players
It
is very important for parents to "release" their daughters to
the team during practices and games. Players need to give their
full attention to the practice or game, to their teammates, and to
their coaches. This is true whether a player is on the field or in
the dugout, in the lineup or in reserve. If there is an urgent need
for parent/player communication during a practice or game, please
check with a coach first so the parent/player contact can
be done in a way that minimizes distraction of the player and the
team.
This may be different from
what you have experienced in Little League, Pony, or even club
teams, but you will find it to be a standard expectation for
Tahoma school programs. You might consider other sports such as
football, basketball , or volleyball; just as players and parents
would not travel or converse back and forth between the bench and
the stands during those events, it is equally important for parents
and players to respect each other's space during softball
activities.
Thank you for
honoring this and other standards that we hold for our
Tahoma Bears teams.
Practice Dress Code
In
addition to the obvious gear that you need to bring to practice,
there are a few things in particular we want to emphasize. Our goal
is to maintain an atmosphere of respect for yourselves as athletes;
for your teammates and coaches; and for the game of softball. In
addition, we want to make sure our practices are focused,
purposeful, and safe.
1)
Please wear an athletic-style t-shirt to practice. Please do
not wear the same fashion clothing that you wear off the field. If
nothing else, your Tahoma PE shirt will be great! (This is a small
step toward the standard you will find at higher grades, where most
teams require some sort of Tahoma shirt for all
practices.)
2)
Please be sure your hair is fully managed. This means no
hair in your face at any time. No long bangs, strategically
placed side-hanging sections, or stray strands wandering about your
head. Use as many ponies and/or headbands as it takes, but get the
job done. That's the way it needs to be during a game, so just
like everything else, let's practice doing it right. Not only is it
a matter of respect for yourselves, your team, and the
game, but it's also a matter of maximizing your performance
and improving your safety.
3)
Please do not wear jewelry. See NFHS Rule 3.2.12, quoted
below. Again, it's about respect, performance and safety. That's
the way it will be during games, so let's practice doing it
right.
Go
Bears!

GEAR
UP, Ladies!
It's time to start gathering the gear you'll need to go along with
your team-issued uniform. The uniform currently consists of shorts,
pants, and a sleeveless top. We also hope to have a couple of the
items listed below as options on your "spirit wear" order. However,
you may want to start shopping for some of the essential items, to
be sure you have them in time for the first game.
Remember that you are a Tahoma
Bear when you play on this team! We will wear our
school colors with pride! If you have club team equipment
that is of a proper color (see below), then you are welcome to use
it. If it is of any other color, however, you may use it ONLY
during practices, but NOT during games. So check those
shoelaces!
Keep in mind that we are governed by NFHS
rules regarding equipment, uniforms, and accessories. There
are reasons for the limits you find in our team requirements. If
you would like references, please ask your
coaches.
1) fielding glove (be
sure it's a fastpitch glove, not baseball; there's a big
difference!)
2) socks: white with royal blue stirrups
3) sliding shorts: black or royal, if worn under
shorts; any color if concealed under long pants
4) knee pads: black or royal, if exposed; any color if
concealed under long pants
5) long sleeves: royal (Underarmour,
Wickmax, Mizuno, Easton, Nike, etc.) 6)
cleats (or tennis shoes): black is preferred, but
royal or white are acceptable. Cleats are optional, but
HIGHLY recommended for performance and safety. Cleats must be
molded plastic, not metal, and MAY NOT BE ROUND--be sure to check
if you are considering using soccer cleats. 7) hair
management: black, royal, gold, or white (elastic ponies and
headbands; no hardware is allowed)
Optional: 1) batting gloves (Easton TurboSlots
recommended, but not required)
2)
bat (be sure to get appropriate length/weight/drop for your
size and
style)
3) sunglasses (can make a big difference in
performance and
safety!)
4) mouthguard and/or faceguard (talk with your
parents about these)
SPECIAL NOTE: NFHS Rule 3.2.12 (regarding
jewelry) "Players in the game are prohibited from
wearing jewelry such as rings, watches, earrings, bracelets,
necklaces (including cloth or string types), barrettes or other
hard cosmetic or decorative items. Religious and
medical-alert medals are not considered jewelry. A religious medal
must be taped and worn under the uniform. A medical-alert
medal must be taped and may be visible."
Thanks for your great Tahoma spirit, and happy shopping!
Go Bears!
