Let me introduce
myself...

I was born in
Memphis, Tennessee and I have a twin sister named Jane. Our family
moved to Washington state the summer before I began sixth grade. I
grew up in Richland (one of the Tri-Cities) in Eastern Washington.
My favorite teacher was Mr. Crowley, my sixth grade teacher. He and I still
keep in touch and he has inspired me to be the best sixth grade
teacher I can be. I graduated from the Universtiy of
Washington with my science degree and Central Washington University
with my teaching certificate. I am a devoted Dawg
fan!!!
Some of my favorite
jobs before becoming a teacher were: being a summer camp
counselor, working at the Pacific Science Center, and driving a
pedicab in downtown Seattle. These were three jobs that prepared me
with some of the people skills I would need for my future as a
teacher.
In 1990 I began my
career as an educator teaching junior high science at Hanford
Secondary School in Richland, WA (the same school I attended as a
kid!). After I married I moved back to Seattle and taught junior
high science in the Kent School District. After a couple of years I
decided to try teaching elementary school and I became a sixth
(elementary) and fourth grade teacher. In 1995 I transitioned
into the position ofcomputer teacher. It was a lot of fun and I
learned so much! I taught all of the grade levels... kindergarten
through sixth grade. I was a computer teacher for eight years. In
2003 I was honored with the "Outstanding Educator of the Year
Award" as the computer teacher at Grass Lake
Elementary.
When I temporarily
left teaching to stay at home with my children I volunteered and
subbed in the classrooms at Glacier Park Elementary here in Maple
Valley, where my children were (and one still is) students. I
really liked that school
and The Tahoma School
District. A few years ago I decided that it was time for me to go
back to teaching and I really wanted to teach in our city. I feel
very lucky to be a teacher in this school district and here at
Cedar River Middle School. In addition to technology, science is my
other favorite subject and I am excited to be back teaching sixth
graders. This was my 21st year of being a teacher, but my fifth
year here at Cedar River. In June I was most delighted to receive a
wonderful honor: "The Outstanding Educator of the Year Award" from
Cedar River PTA. Thank you all for making this such a great place
to be.
I have two children,
Emma, 14, and Jack, 11.Teaching and being a mom pretty much keeps
me busy 24/7! I don't have a lot of free time, but when I do,
some of the things you may find me doing are: soccer,
reading, playing with my iMac computer, going to the movies,
shopping in bookstores, taking care of my flower garden, visiting
museums, trying new restaurants or... just having coffee and
chatting with my close friends. My hobbies include doing all sorts
of creative things: arts and crafts projects, house projects,
photography and videography. I've also been taking some
beginning Italian classes, which has been great
fun.
When I get to know my
students I always ask them what their favorite things are... so...
some of my favorite things are... I adore romantic comedy movies
and mystery novels. I love being around fresh flowers and exotic
plants. My favorite place is a sunny tropical beach under a palm
tree. The foreign city I've most enjoyed visiting was Venice,
Italy. My favorite color is periwinkle blue. My favorite animal is
the firefly. The foods I like best are
French food, Thai food, Japanese food, fresh fruit, sweet iced
tea, coffee, and of course chocolate! My favorite
subjects in school were the biological sciences (animals, plants,
human body, fungi, microscopic organisms
etc...)
I'm excited for this
school year and I am committed to making science an interesting and
worthwhile experience for my students. It is my goal that they have
a solid understanding of basic science skills and processes, and
that when they look back on this year they have fond memories of
their experiences in my class. When they leave in June, it is my
hope that each student is excited about science and looks forward
to experiencing more science in his/her
future.

Again, I am thrilled
to be here at Cedar River and am looking forward to a very
successful school year. :-)
