Dear Families,

I would like to welcome your child and you to first grade!  My name is Julie McGrath and I will be your child’s first grade teacher. I will be starting my second year at Rock Creek. I am loving teaching here!  I have taught for 29 years in Renton and Enumclaw at 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 1st grade. I am finishing teaching 2nd grade in Portable 3. Just yesterday, my 2nd graders helped many fourth graders move our room to D-3. Our class will be located by Mrs. Mitchell’s and Mrs. Kiffer’s first grade classrooms in D Pod.

Here is a little information to help you to know me a little better. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Pacific Lutheran University and my Master’s Degree from Seattle Pacific University.  Most recently, I received my National Board Certification in November, 2011. I am very excited for this opportunity to move back to first grade. (I taught first grade 12 years prior to this year.) I’m a mom of two kids named Ryan and Michelle.  Ryan will be graduating with his degree in Criminal Justice in December from St. Martin’s University in Lacey!  He loves to play golf and he works his summers at Druids Glenn Golf Course. Michelle will be a junior at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. She loves to sing and perform in drama plays. Her summer job is a custodial helper right here at Rock Creek! Mr. McGrath is the principal of Cedar River Middle School. We have a one year old yellow lab puppy named Brody. I love teaching children, doing Zumba, visiting Disneyland, and telling many stories about the puppy and his human family J. I quickly realized after joining the staff that I love Disneyland as much as Mrs. Riggs, which is A LOT! J I can’t wait to get to know your child better!

First grade will be an amazing year with much academic growth. Our overall theme will be Communities, Cultures, and Connections. We will be weaving this theme throughout the three units of study: Community Life, Australia, and Marine Life. I would like to welcome you to the child-teacher-parent team as we join together to support your child’s learning. I strongly believe in and encourage two way communication. You can reach me at if you have questions or need clarifications. We will have our First Grade Meet and Greet on August 26th from 2-3 pm in room D3. Details will be coming your way later this summer. Plan on bringing all of your supplies on that day. This helps to make the first day run more smoothly.  It is a fun time to greet old friends, and even make some new friends. I hope to see you then!

I feel honored to be able to fulfill the important role of being your child’s first grade teacher for the 2015-2016 school year. Have an amazingly, fun summer! If you can, please keep your child reading, reading, reading!  Remember:

The more you read, the better you read, so read, Read, READ!!!

On Tuesday, September 1st, we will be ready to start our GREAT year!
