Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to fifth grade at Shadow Lake. This year I will be teaching reading, writing, social studies and science.

In writing students will be writing  in narrative, expository and persuasive writing modes. We will keep a writing binder at school which will contain tools for writing, ideas for writing topics, prewrites, rough drafts, final published stories, daily journals, and worksheets.  We usually start each writing session with a short lesson, then students write in a writers workshop format . Students take several of their pieces through the entire writing process of prewrite, rough draft, revision, editing and then publication.  These final pieces stay in their writing binder for year and allow us to see growth.
The binders come home at the end of the year.

Sudents are expected to participate in the PAWs reading program. This means they need to read at home for a minimum of 20 minutes per day for 20 days each month.  Reading more minutes and more days within a month is terrific, and of course makes your child a stronger reader.  PAWS recording sheets are due on the last day of each month.

Spelling books are sent home at the beginning of each year. Students are responsible for accurately writing  a weekly spelling list of high frequency words each week.  Each week we will work on the next numbered week. This means practicing these words and taking a test each Friday in class.

We exist on :a great many pencils, erasers, paper ,good humor , a good story that we find in our everyday lives and the reflection of these experiences in a written form. Writing helps us understand what we think and often why we think it.

If you have questions or comments throughout the year please e mail me at klindstr@tahomasd.us
Sincerely,

Mrs. Lindstrom
