Mindfulness is paying attention here and now, with kindness and curiosity, and then choosing one's behavior. It is a practice Ms. Strasser is starting out with her 5th period students during every Gold Thursday APP time. Participation is completely voluntary.

Ms. Strasser first discovered mindfulness when the teacher who influenced her most, her 9th grade Global Studies teacher at Wilson High School in Portland, shared an article about mindfulness practice in Portland Public Schools with her. As Ms. Strasser started to notice the stress and anxiety of her students rise, she began to research mindfulness and mindfulness-based stress reduction, or MBSR. It was this research that led her to discover MD Amy Saltzman's A Still Quiet Place: A Mindfulness Program for Teaching Children and Adolescents to Ease Stress and Difficult Emotions. The practice Ms. Strasser is doing with her 5th period comes from the lessons in this book.
