Hello My name is Shawn Martinson and It is my pleasure to teach American Studies and Introduction to Psychology here at Tahoma.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS & POLICIES

Be professional in your approach to school

1. BE APPROPRIATE: Conduct yourself in a manner appropriate to a good learning environment.

2. BE RESPECTFUL: Respect yourself and others by being kind and courteous in the classroom.

3. BE ON TIME: Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

4. BE PREPARED: Always bring your books, notebook, pens, pencils, planers, homework to class.

5. BE CLEAN: Help keep the classroom clean by picking-up after yourself.

6. BE ON TASK: Get involved in the curriculum. Participate in activities and discussions.

7. BE ACCOUNTABLE: complete all class work and homework on time. Only you can be responsible for you.

8. IF YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF, “IS DOING THIS OK?” IT PROBABLY IS NOT. PLEASE REFER TO RULE NUMBER ONE.

 If the class expectations and policies are not followed: possible actions depending on the frequency and severity of the behavior may include:

  • Verbal warning or conference
  • After school detention or equivalent
  • Parental contact/conference
  • Referral to office

POLICIES

DRUGS & ALCOHOL:

  • This is a Drug and Alcohol Free Classroom,
  • This means the NO inappropriate references to drugs, alcohol, or related subjects will be tolerated.
  • References Include: verbal communications, pictures, drawings, ect.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

  • Cell phones, IPODS, and other electronic devices are not to be used in this classroom without expressed, prior, permission from the Teacher.
  • Per school policy, misuse of an electronic device in the class will result in it being confiscated and taken to a school administrator for end of the day or next day retrieval.
  • Please be aware that almost all cell phone providers allow you to schedule when a cell phone can be used. Just check on their website.
    • Ex. You can schedule your students phone to shut off from 8:05 to 9:05 for 1st Period.

 ATTENDANCE/TARDY:

  • Assisting students in establishing lifelong habits of reliability and promptness is an instructional objective in this particular course.  Progress toward this goal will be measured, at least in part, by tracking student attendance.  Therefore, a student’s grade or credit in this class may be adversely affected by reason of tardiness or absence. 
  • BE HERE and BE ON TIME.
  • On-going, active participation is a requirement for success in this class.
  • Cooperative groups, discussions, films, and projects involve daily participation.
  • Absences must be excused the following day.

 ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

  • I will NOT tolerate cheating of any sort.
  • If a student is caught cheating the following consequences are possible:
    • zero on the entire assignment, test, quiz, or project (NO make-up option),
    • parental contact,
    • office referral,
    • loss of semester credit. 
    • A student will be considered someone cheating if he/she is…
      • Looking around the room during a test/quiz,
      • Using another students map for  map reading tests,
      • Copying someone else’s work,
      • Plagiarizing - cutting and/or pasting from an electronic source,
      • Allowing someone to copy work.
      • This is NOT a comprehensive list.

STUDENT & FAMILY ACCESS:

  • All students and their parents and/or guardians have access to look into my grade book whenever they wish via family access.
  • I endeavor to keep my grades as up to date as possible.
  • Parents, if for some reason you cannot access family access from home, please contact the secretaries for assistance.
  • This program allows students and parents/guardians to know exactly what grades they have earned on any assignment and in the class at any time they wish.
  • Therefore, no student or parent/guardian should ever be unaware of what their current grade currently is at any time.
