- Bull Rider by Suzanne
Williams--When his older brother, a bull-riding champion, returns
from the Iraq War partially paralyzed, fourteen-year-old Cam takes
a break from skateboarding to enter a bull-riding contest, in hopes
of winning the $15,000 prize and motivating his depressed brother
to continue with his rehabilitation.
- The Reformed Vampire Support
Group by Catherine Jinks--This isn't quite your
Twilight romance saga, though there is a
handsome werewolf and a kiss. No, Fifteen-year-old vampire Nina
(who has been 15 for over 50 years) and her gang have more in
common with the Addams Family or the Munsters (those kooky and "all
together ooky" sitcom characters). They meet weekly to try to
suppress their vampire tendencies. Not much changes until one of
them is murdered (staked) and the others set out to solve the
crime. Set in Australia, this slightly gruesome (especially if you
care for guinea pigs) and largely hysterical comedy of errors is a
satisfying read.
- Dope Sick by Walter Dean
Myers--Jeremy (Lil J) Dance is on the run after a drug deal gone
bad in which an undercover police officer is shot and left clinging
to life. Somewhat like Dicken's A Christmas
Carol, Lil J encounters Kelly who uses his remote
control to show glimpses of Jeremy's past, present and possible
future. Jeremy is forced to face how drugs and his decisions of how
to respond to hardships have brought him to where he is. Is it too
late for him to change? An engaging read though the street/drug
culture slang used throughout the story may have you rereading some
passages to translate just what's happening.
-
Along for the Ride, by
Sarah Dessen--Auden gets a chance to recapture the
carefree teen life she missed while her parents were going through
a divorce when she goes to spend the summer with her dad and his
new family in a charming beach town and meets fellow insomniac Eli,
an intriguing loner fighting demons of his
own.
- Jerk California,
by Jonathan Friesen --Plagued
by Tourette's syndrome and a stepfather who despises him, Sam meets
an old man in his small Minnesota town who sends him on a road trip
designed to help him discover the truth about his
life.
