  • Guys Read - Sponsored by author Jon Scieszka (Math Curse, True Story of Three Little Pigs, The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Studpid Tales...) this site is based on three principles. Boys should choose what they read, pick from all different kinds of books (not just school novels) and talk to other guys about what they're reading.
  • Harper Teen Books - Lots of great resources.
  • Reader Girlz - Begun by four young adult authors from Washington State, this site seeks to empower girls through reading and social activism. It features a variety of genres and chats with authors of current teen titles. It also provides ideas for getting involved in your community to make a difference.
  • Shelfari - Create an online book shelf; write reviews of books you've read and share with others. (A "myspace" for talking about books)
  • Teen Reads - This site is all about books for young adults. Includes reviews of new titles, information on authors and more.

Community Contributor

  • Books for charity - Find out more about sponsor of the blue book bins and groups benefiting from library book donation drives.
  • Legislative Page Program - Students ages 14-16 can apply for this week-long program to our state's law making body. Pages are sponsored by a state senator or representative and learn more about the role of state government by assisting these representatives and attending
  • Volunteer Match - A non-profit site sharing various opportunities to volunteer; can search by zip code

General Research

  • Bibme - Enter bibliography information for a variety of sources and this site will create a works cited page in MLA (or other) format
  • Citation Maker - Easily create bibliographies. Enter citation information for the resources you use and this program will create the format. Tahoma uses MLA style.
  • Clusty Search Engine - Try as alternative to Google. This metasearch provides clusters of results. Can help focus your searches as well as give you additional key terms.
  • Copyright friendly images and sounds - Links to many resources that can be used for student/staff projects. Most of the media in these collections are in the public domain or are attached to generous copyright licensing. Though you may not need to ask permission to use them when publishing on the Web for educational purposes, you should cite or attribute these images to their creators unless otherwise notified! If you see any copyright notices on these pages, read them for further instructions.
  • EasyWhoIs - Use this site to find out who owns a website. 1. Type in the domain name of the address you are validating in the search box (remove the http:// or www.). 2. You may need to truncate the address you are searching (from right to left up to the first forward slash).
  • Guide to Grammar and Writiing - Explanations and tips on everything from parts of speech and punctuation to writing essays and more
  • Guide to MLA Bibliographic Style - Springfield Township High School guide for citing print and electronic sources.
  • King County Library - A great source for books and research with excellent online support. You can activate your library card at any King County Library (Maple Valley, Covington, Black Diamond, Fairwood...and more!). Then place a hold on books via the Interenet. KCLS has many different databases which are great for research. Plus, check out some of the teen activities taking place at your local library. Katie Boyce is the teen librarian working with Tahoma.

  • MSN Encarta - Online encyclopedia--Often a great place to start when researching a topic you know little about.
  • Open Library - Search for books, especially books in public domain scanned for online reading
  • The Owl at Purdue - Online writing lab including information on MLA citations
  • Wayback Machine - Use this site to see the history of a website. 1. Type in the URL of a site or page where you would like to start and click the Take Me Back button. 2. From the results, select a date from the archived dates listed. If one particular date does not provide a viewable result, try another. You’ll quickly find one that works.

  • Glogster - Create online posters using photos, videos, music, text and links.
  • Toondoo - Create your own comic strips or graphic "novels".
  • Voicethread (Education Version) - Secure K-12 network for creating and sharing projects and presentations. At the core is a media player that allows users to incorporate voice, text, still images and video into what they create and allows others to comment on that work.
  • Wordl - Create "word clouds", artistic layout of text. Type in text or copy tags from a social network and a program generates a visual layout; you can play around with the layout, font, and colors for different results
