Dear Families,                                                                                                                                                                                               September, 2019

I would like to welcome your child and you to first grade!  My name is Julie McGrath and I am so excited to be your child’s first grade teacher.  I love teaching in Tahoma! I have taught for 33 years in Renton, Enumclaw, and Tahoma. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. I am excited to start year 34 at Glacier Park Elementary. We will be in room 303 next to Mrs. Sumner’s first grade class in room 304, and Mrs. Wittman's first grade class in 302.

Here is a little information to help you to get to know me a little better. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Pacific Lutheran University and my Master’s Degree from Seattle Pacific University.  More recently, I received my National Board Certification in November, 2011. I’m a mom of two kids named Ryan and Michelle.  Ryan graduated with his degree in Criminal Justice from St. Martin’s University in Lacey!  He is working at REI.  Michelle recently graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma with a Communications Degree. She is working at Costco’s Corporate Office in Issaquah.  Mr. McGrath is the Principal of Maple View Middle School in the old high school building. We have a five year old yellow lab puppy named Brody and Michelle has Tyson the cat. I love teaching children! I also love doing Zumba, visiting Disneyland, and telling many stories about the puppy and his human family.  I can’t wait to get to know your child better!   Many kids call me M&M .  I am Mrs. McGrath and I love M@M’s, Mickey Mouse, and Minnie Mouse too!

First grade will be an amazing year with much academic growth.  It will be so exciting to watch your child’s progress throughout our year together. We will begin the year learning about community life before diving into the New Generation Science Curriculum . I would like to welcome you to the Child-Teacher-Parent Team as we join together to support your child’s learning. I strongly believe in and encourage two-way communication. You can reach me at if you have questions or need clarifications.

I feel honored to be able to fulfill the important role of being your child’s first grade teacher for the 2019-2020 school year.  If you can, please remember to make time to read to your child or have your child read to you 5 days a week. It makes a HUGE difference during our first grade year!

The more you read, the better you read, so read, ReaD, READ!!!

We are going to have a MAGICAL school year!

Julie McGrath
